An honest look at the decision.
Solar Panels With or Without a Battery
A battery is not essential to a solar system, and it is not right for every home. It lets you store surplus daytime generation and use it later, but whether that is worth doing depends on when you use electricity and the tariffs you are on.
This page sets out the factors so you can decide with clear information.
Solar without a battery
Without a battery, your home uses solar electricity as it is generated, and the surplus is exported. With a Smart Export Guarantee tariff you are paid for that export. If someone is home during the day and uses electricity then, a good share of the generation is used directly.
Solar with a battery
With a battery, surplus generation is stored and used in the evening and overnight, so you buy less electricity from the grid and export less. Households that are out during the day, and use most of their electricity in the evening, typically see the clearest benefit.
Tariffs change the answer
The difference between what you pay to import electricity and what you are paid to export it is central. Some tariffs also offer lower-rate electricity at set times, which a battery can charge from. Rates are set by suppliers and change, so compare current tariffs rather than relying on a fixed rule.
Adding a battery later
You do not have to decide everything at once. Many existing solar systems can take a battery later through a retrofit, subject to a compatibility check, and battery storage installed in a home currently carries 0% VAT, including retrofits.
How we help you decide
Our battery size calculator gives a first estimate from your usage. At the survey we look at your roof, usage pattern and existing equipment, and we will tell you plainly if a battery is unlikely to suit your home.
