Solar without a pitched roof.
Solar Panels on a Flat Roof
A flat roof does not rule out solar. Panels are mounted on frames that tilt them towards the sun, and a flat roof can sometimes offer more freedom in orientation than a pitched one, because the panels do not have to follow the roof slope.
This page explains how flat roof systems are designed and what we check before fitting one.
How panels are mounted
On a flat roof, panels sit on angled frames rather than lying on the surface. The frames are either held down by ballast, which avoids penetrating the roof, or fixed to the structure. The right method depends on the roof's load capacity, the covering and wind exposure.
Orientation and spacing
Because the frames set the angle, panels can face south even if the building does not. Rows must be spaced so one does not shade the next, which affects how many panels fit. East and west facing layouts are another option, spreading generation across the day.
Roof condition comes first
Panels stay on a roof for many years, so the covering underneath should be in good condition before installation. If a flat roof is near the end of its life, replacing it first is usually the better decision. Drainage must also be kept clear around the frames.
Extensions, garages and dormers
Flat roofs on rear extensions, garages and dormers are common candidates. They are often out of public view, which can help in conservation areas. Access for installation and maintenance is checked at survey.
How we work
At your free home survey we check the roof, the electrical installation and the planning position for your property before proposing a system.
Why homeowners choose Cozy Home Solutions
Cozy Home Solutions Ltd is an MCS certified installer of solar panels, battery storage and home EV chargers, based at Unit 2, Old Station Yard, Watlington Road, Cowley, Oxford, and working with homeowners across England and Wales. We are registered with NAPIT, HIES and EPVS, and we are a Hometree partner.
Every installation starts with a free home survey and a written quotation. When the work is finished, your system is commissioned and handed over with its MCS certificate, the DNO notification and the manufacturer warranties registered in your name. Battery cover runs to 10 years, and the installation itself is protected by an insurance-backed guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
Can solar panels go on a flat roof?
Yes. Panels are mounted on angled frames, held down by ballast or fixed to the structure depending on the roof.
Do flat roof panels need drilling?
Not always. Ballasted systems avoid penetrating the roof, subject to the roof's load capacity.
Which way should flat roof panels face?
Frames let panels face south regardless of the building, or an east and west layout can spread generation across the day.
Should I replace my flat roof first?
If the covering is near the end of its life, replacing it before installing panels is usually the better decision.
Will panels on a garage roof work?
Often yes. We check the structure, shading and access at the survey.
