Solar in protected neighbourhoods.

Solar Panels in a Conservation Area

Conservation areas protect the character of a whole neighbourhood rather than a single building. Many homes in conservation areas can still have solar panels, but the rules are tighter than elsewhere, particularly for panels visible from the street.

This page explains what to consider. It is not legal advice; the position for your property comes from your local planning authority.

What is different in a conservation area

Permitted development, which lets many homes fit solar without a planning application, applies with extra restrictions in conservation areas. Panels facing a highway or on a principal elevation are the usual sticking point. Some conservation areas also have Article 4 directions that remove permitted development rights altogether.

SI 2026/896, an amendment to the permitted development rules for solar, came into force on 27 August 2026. Check the current position with your local planning authority rather than relying on older advice.

EV chargers in conservation areas

From 21 October 2026, SI 2026/1056 extends permitted development for EV charge points beyond off-street parking. Conservation areas are excluded from that new route, so a charger that would be permitted development elsewhere may need an application in a conservation area.

Where panels work best

Rear roof slopes not visible from the street, outbuildings and garages are usually the easiest places to fit. All-black panels, such as the DMEGC 465W All Black we install, sit more quietly on a roof than panels with silver frames.

How we work

Planning rules depend on the property, so we check the position for your home with the local planning authority before work goes ahead.

At your free home survey we check the roof, the electrical installation and the planning position for your property before proposing a system.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have solar panels in a conservation area?

Often yes, but the rules are tighter, particularly for panels visible from the street. Check the position with your local planning authority.

Do I need planning permission for solar in a conservation area?

It depends on where the panels go and whether an Article 4 direction applies. Panels facing a highway are the most likely to need an application.

Can I fit an EV charger in a conservation area?

Conservation areas are excluded from the new permitted development route for EV charge points introduced by SI 2026/1056, so you may need an application.

Do all-black panels help in a conservation area?

They are less visually prominent than panels with silver frames, which can help on sensitive streets.

How do I find out if I live in a conservation area?

Your local planning authority publishes its conservation area boundaries, usually on its website.
