Loft Boarding and Insulation
Cozy Home Solutions offers raised loft boarding and multifoil insulation across England and Wales, from our Cowley, Oxford head office. The starting point is your existing roof, the condition of its timbers and insulation, and the way you want to use the space. Boarding and insulation solve different problems: one provides a storage surface, while the other forms part of the home’s thermal envelope.
A useful loft is not simply a floor laid over everything already there. Safe access, a suitable supporting structure, clear ventilation routes and access to services all matter. Tell us whether you need storage, an insulation improvement or both, and we can discuss an appropriate assessment before a written proposal.

What we install
Our insulation service brings together raised loft boarding and multifoil insulation. Raised boarding keeps a storage deck above the insulation rather than pressing it into the joist spaces. Multifoil is a flexible layered material used within a designed roof, wall or floor construction. Neither choice should be made from a photograph alone: the existing construction and intended use determine whether it is suitable.
The linked pages below explain the boarding options, indicative cost considerations, installation principles and the YBS SuperQuilt product. Use them to prepare questions rather than to diagnose your own roof. A storage deck is not a habitable room, and fitting insulation is not a substitute for resolving leaks, structural defects or unsafe wiring.
Why boarding straight onto insulation is a problem
In a conventional cold loft, insulation normally sits at ceiling level. Its installed depth may extend above the tops of the ceiling joists. Screwing boards directly onto those joists can squash the material, leaving less effective insulation beneath the deck. Council guidance advises lifting storage boards clear of insulation rather than compressing it.
The same job must also respect roof ventilation. Clear routes at the eaves and any ventilation arrangement above the insulation need to remain effective. Raised supports help separate the board from the insulation, but their presence alone does not prove the roof is ventilated correctly. The whole arrangement needs checking, including obstructions and existing moisture.
Raised loft boarding
A raised system uses suitable supports and boards to create a level storage surface above the insulation. The support arrangement must match the existing timbers, insulation depth and intended loading. It is important to distinguish space available for boards from space that is safe to use: sloping eaves, bracing and awkward access can all limit the practical storage area.
You may only need a route from the hatch and a small area for boxes. A larger deck can be considered where the structure and access allow it. The proposal should identify the usable area, the support system and any restrictions on loading. Ceiling joists are not automatically suitable for heavy furniture, concentrated loads or use as a new room.
Multifoil insulation
Multifoil contains reflective layers and separating materials. Its performance depends on its place within an assembly, including the air spaces and other insulation required by the manufacturer’s assessed detail. A quoted assembly R-value is not the same as the material’s core R-value. Comparing products only by a headline number can lead to choosing the wrong construction.
YBS SuperQuilt is the named product in our service brief. Its current manufacturer documents must be matched to the product supplied and the intended application. We do not claim a mineral-wool thickness comparison or assume that one layer will satisfy every roof’s requirements. Sealing, moisture control and fire restrictions are as important as selecting the material.
How a job runs, from survey to sign off
First, describe the property, your access arrangements and what you want to store or improve. During assessment, the relevant checks include the supporting timbers, existing insulation, signs of damp, electrical services, roof ventilation and hatch access. If another specialist needs to investigate something first, the boarding or insulation scope should reflect that rather than conceal the problem.
The written proposal should set out the agreed area and construction, preparation work, access arrangements and any exclusions. Before work starts, agree how belongings will be moved and how the household can use the rooms below. At handover, ask for the installed product details, use restrictions, manufacturer instructions and any applicable approval documentation. Insulation work does not receive a solar MCS certificate.
Where we work
Cozy Home Solutions is based at Unit 2, Old Station Yard, Watlington Road, Cowley, Oxford, OX4 6FE, and takes enquiries across England and Wales. Provide your postcode so the team can discuss your home and the proposed work. Coverage does not imply we have completed a loft installation in every town; we will only publish local job examples when actual records and photographs are supplied.
For a wider home-energy project, insulation and solar panels should be assessed on their own merits. Improving insulation can reduce heat demand, while solar design depends on electricity use, roof space and other factors. A reduction in heating demand does not automatically mean a smaller solar array is appropriate. Our solar page explains that separate installation service.
Common questions
Do you fit boarding as well as insulation?
Yes. We offer raised loft boarding and multifoil insulation. Tell us whether you need a storage deck, insulation work or both, so the assessment considers the right construction rather than treating every loft in the same way.
Can I keep the insulation already in my loft?
It may be possible where its condition and the proposed build-up are suitable. Existing insulation should not be squashed under a storage deck. Moisture, ventilation and access to services must also be checked before deciding what to retain.
Does insulation work have MCS certification?
MCS relates to our renewable-energy installation work, not this insulation service. Product assessment, building regulations and any required approvals must be checked separately for the particular insulation construction.
Will you turn the loft into a bedroom?
These pages describe storage boarding and insulation, not a loft conversion. A habitable room involves a different design and may require structural work, fire protection, stairs and building-control approval. Do not use a storage deck as a bedroom.
